Random idea for an Undertale AU
Humanity never stopped experimenting with magic and found a way to create Humunculi indistinguishable from any other human. The only noticeable difference is the lack of a soul.
One day a small child falls underground that can’t engage in battles for some reason. To every monster they meet they say “Take me to your monarchs, I have a message for them.”
Toriel, confused but intrigued, doesn’t let them know who she is and decides it would be best to let this one through. After all they can’t fight so they can’t kill or be killed. Of coarse not after offering some pie for the road. This time she opens the door herself and offers the little humunculus one last time to stay with her because she will not open that door again. They politely refuse and thank her before trudging through the knee high snow.
Sans and Papyrus encounters would progress as normal until the battle that wouldn’t happen. Since his new friend doesn’t have a soul there isn’t a need to fight. Papyrus would then instruct the Humunculus on how to reach the king as normal. (The one “Fight” I’d allow is the date with Papyrus because that scene is too good to not have.)
Undyne is the hardest obstacle in this version. She knows that this creature isn’t human but it sure as heck looks like one. And if they were sent by the humans then they are a THREAT! She throws everything at you. Literally! Spears, boulders, other monsters, all in a running segment that has no battles but can still end in a game over because like. Humunculi aren’t immortal or indestructable, they just can’t “Fight.” It still ends in Hotland and still ends with the option to rehydrate her. It’s at this point that any otherworldly observers watching this unfurl from outside of time notice that in this version Sans hasn’t been seen since Snowdin. Though Flowey has been noticed at least twice more than normal.
Alphys has been watching and realizes that the humunculus is clearly not human so, Hotland and the Core basically don’t happen and it’s mostly a straight shot to New Home.
In New Home the monsters still give you the basic rundown of what happened to the Crown Prince and his Best Friend. The Judgement hall is empty. Look Sans made a promise to watch over any humans and this kid clearly is not one. Can’t even fight so how would he run down the stats!?
Asgore is found watering the flowers and the initial encounter plays out as normal. Until you get to the barrier. It took him a bit to notice that the child before him isn’t human but he does.
H = Humunclus. A = Asgore
H: “I am here to deliver a message to the monarchs of Monsterkind.”
A: “I am afraid it’s just me now. Tor- The queen is... gone.”
H: “Then I shall address this to you. The message is this. ‘We are prepared to lower the barrier but first you must provide the Six Human Souls you have collected thus far to our messenger so they may be returned to their families.’”
A: “.... .... ...... You would have us monsters relinquish our only means of one day lowering the barrier ourselves? How can I be assured that you will uphold this agreement and not. Just. Leave us down here with NOTHING!? WOULD YOU TAKE EVERYTHING AWAY FROM US AGAIN!?!”
The First Fight begins.
Throughout the Underground and the Humunculus’ encounters the presence of a soul is hinted at but isn’t fully noticeable until now. Unfortunately for our Humunculus they have a soul now and they Have to fight.
It is brutal. The only reason you can even survive this fight is because of how unfocused Asgore is. He is not disciplined and is acting on pure heartache and rage. He isn’t giving clear openings, and he is not just letting you hit him back. But. In his emotionally compromised state he forgot to shatter the Mercy Button. You can only run.
Flame trap you and Tridents form behind you. But before your demise a fireball forms and punts him away. But it’s not going to end that easily. He explains what is happening and before you can blink Spears fly in and it starts again with a double fight. The Humunculus Vs Asgore and Undyne. It is stupid hard but thankfully super short as Toriel buts in again with the aide of Papyrus.
Toriel and Papyrus convince them to relinquish half of the souls now and half when the barrier is down. Because if they don’t honor this someone can take a soul, cross over, and Asgore can have his war. Cooler heads prevail and the humunculus crosses over with half of the souls plus the one that made the fights possible.
A tense moment. And then the Barrier falls. The Monsters are free. The Souls returned to their families.
The humans for the most part reconcile with the monsters and give them their own home on the surface. The damage cannot truly be undone but both societies will persist. And maybe one day truly live in harmony.
